High representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini: The international priority on Libya is to find a “lasting solution to the crisis”

On Thursday the High representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that the priority of European and international action in Libya is to find a lasting solution to the current crisis, while also considering the “migrant crisis”.

After the conclusion of the first meeting of the Working Group on the problem of illegal immigrants in Libya, Mogherini clarified that they are keen to keep Libya updated on all that is occuring on an international level as “Libya is not a party to this working group”. She added that Libyan cooperation is necessary.

She also explained that EU support and funding for international organizations succeeded in repatriating some 16,000 illegal immigrants from Libya voluntarily to their countries of origin and that they are preparing programs to rehabilitate and integrate them into their communities.

She confirmed that a delegation from the working group will visit Libya soon in order to intensify cooperation with the Libyan authorities to facilitate access to migrants in the accommodation centers so that they can be registered and those entitled to international protection can be identified.
