Mogherini: The European Union Supports The National Conference

European Union foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini, on Tuesday, confirmed that the European Union supports the plan of the UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, to hold the national conference in the course of the first weeks of the new year.

During a meeting with the head of the presidential council of the Al-Wefaq government, Mogherini reconfirmed the support of the whole Union to the Presidential Council.

From his side, Al-Sarraj called for the need to show firmness towards those who hamper the political process aimed at reaching a stable democratic civilian state, stressing the need to abide by sound legal mechanisms.

He pointed to the importance of activating the Quartet body composed of the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and the Arab League, so as to unite the positions of States towards the Libyan crisis, according to the Information Office of the Council.

The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, said in his briefing before the UN Security Council in November that elections should be held in Libya in March after the National Convention early next year.
