Ghassan Salame: Elections require that Libyan parties accept the results

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Libya, Ghassan Salame, said that the elections in Libya requires the prior acceptance by all parties to any election results.

During a press conference held in Tripoli with the head of the Electoral Commission Emad Al-Sayeh, Salame stated that “three conditions must be met for the elections, a technical condition, and the requirement to secure the largest possible participation of Libyans in the elections, in addition to a legislative requirement, which is the enactment of the law necessary to implement the electoral process”.

Salame added that “there is no alternative to the elections, they are part of the UN mission’s work plan”; pointing to the need to form an independent government that is concerned with living conditions- such as the lack of liquidity and the status and maintenance of public institutions.
