The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Accord, UN special envoy Ghassan Salame, and the National Commission for Human Rights condemned the killing and dumping of the 36 bodies found in Abyar east of Benghazi. They described the incident as being a heinous violation of the law. They also called for prompt and impartial investigations into the incident.
In a statement publish on the UN mission’s page, Ghassan Salame added that many similar cases have occurred in the past two years, but that there has been no accountability for the actions of the perpetrators. As such, the National Commission for Human Rights asked that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and the Office of the Attorney-General conduct immediate investigations on a national and international scale in order to identify the parties responsible for this crime. The Commission also added that the Attorney General’s office and Ministry of Justice must work swiftly in order to end the situation of “impunity” in Libya; as it is one of the main reasons for the escalation and repetition of these crimes and violations.
