Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj had a meeting with officials from the US military and US State Department in Germany on Wednesday.

General Thomas Waldhauser, the commander of US Africa Command and Jonathan Winer, the US State Department Special Envoy to Libya, met with Sarraj in Stuttgart, Germany at the AFRICOM headquarters.

The purpose of the meeting, according to a Facebook post by AFRICOM, was to review the “US Government’s support to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA)” and to discuss potential collaborations between the two governments in order “to promote Libyan stability and security.”

Sarraj was accompanied by General Abdul-Rahman Al-Taweel, the chairman of the Temporary Security Committee for the GNA, and Sarraj’s advisor Taher El-Sonni. The GNA representatives met at AFRICOM Joint Operations Centre with US representatives who gave brief informative updates.

At the meeting table, the GNA requested “close air strike support to the GNA’s forces” to aid in their fight against ISIS. In addition,  they discussed “strategic options for Libya’s future once Sirte is liberated,” said the AFRICOM post.

“Discussions were held on our partnership in countering terrorism, the GNA’s desire for U.S. assistance with future enhanced military capabilities and defense capacity building, to include a desire for greater and more open military-to-military training and information sharing.”
Sarraj said he appreciated the United State’s support in helping Libya combat ISIS in Sirte.
