On Wednesday, the Government of National Accord (GNA) said that it will soon be announcing a new government with hopes of gaining the support of the Libyan parliament, known as the House of Representatives (HoR) based in Tobruk.
The HoR voted “no confidence” to the current Libyan Government on Monday and has given 10 days for the GNA to propose a new government.
A statement was released on Wednesday on the GNA’s website calling on the HoR to back the new government.
The GNA said it will work with various political groups, civil society and the HoR to ensure that the members of the new government are a diverse group.
The current government, led by Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj, was brought together by a UN accord with the purpose of unifying rival Libyan governments.
Martin Kobler, the UN envoy to Libya, posted a tweet on Wednesday saying he “fully supports” the GNA’s announcement in effort to unify Libya.
The elected HoR, which is also recognized by the international community, is based in Tobruk since it was forced to leave Tripoli two years ago after being threatened by a military take over.
Instead of backing the GNA, the HoR decided to back the GNA’s Rival, General Khalifa Haftar who is also based in eastern Libya.
Attaining a vote of confidence by the HoR is necessary for the GNA to gain the legitimacy it needs to run the country.
The HoR said that this is the GNA’s last chance to come up with a new government that the HoR approves of.
Without national stability, Libya will continue to drown in the chaos that has spread throughout the country since the downfall of the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 uprising.
The GNA also stated that its ministers are going to stay in office “to guarantee continuity in the institutions of the state” until the HoR is able to vote again.
