EU foreign ministers announce sanctions against Russia’s paramilitary group “Wagner” ; Because of its “destabilizing practices” in Europe and other countries, including Africa.
The sanctions include the ban on obtaining travel visas and the freezing of assets in the European Union, as the sanctions included the Russian “Alexander Sergeevich” as one of the leaders of “Wagner” mercenaries in Libya.
“Sergeevich” led an attack and reconnaissance battalion in 2014, and was wounded fighting with Khalifa Haftar in 2019, and is responsible for “Wagner” activities that threaten peace, stability and security in Libya.
Tightening the screw
Journalist Ali Abu Zaid said that the European Union wants to tighten the screws on Russia with regard to its official presence in Libya.
Abu Zaid added, in a statement to Arraed, that it is known that imposing sanctions on leaders of the “Wagner” group will make the process of money flowing to it difficult and complicate its access, which will be reflected in the size of its presence in Libya.
The writer stressed that these steps will remain of limited impact unless the political solution in Libya is seriously and effectively supported.
The writer Abu Zaid considered that the announcement of sanctions against Wagner was related to the tension between the European Union and Russia in general, especially in the Libyan and the Ukraine files, and related to the deployment of medium and short-range missiles in northern Europe.
It does not concern us
For his part, political analyst Sanusi Ismail said that the European-American escalation with Russia does not concern us much, as European pressures on Wagner are also related to other aspects.
Ismail explained that the other conflicts are the Wagner conflict with France in Mali and Chad, pointing out that the failure to settle the situation in Syria may pose a challenge to these countries.
He added that the country can invest in relations with Russia and benefit from the development of dialogue between Russia and Turkey and the Egyptian-Russian relations, as this can solve the problem without Libya facing the Russian bear, and not in the interest of the Libyans at this difficult time that the Libyan state is going through.
