Middle East Eye: US officials warn of foreign interference in the Libyan elections.

During a HoR hearing last Thursday, US Deputies expressed their concerns that the presence of foreign fighters and the influence of regional powers would cause potential pressures on Libya, in light of preparations for the December 24 elections.

According to the American “Middle East Eye” website, Republican Congressman Tim Burchett said during the session that it is important that elections be held in Libya at the end of this month without forceful efforts or interference by foreign governments.

Ted Deutch, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa and Global Counter-Terrorism, said that there are very significant risks to the interests of the United States and to Libyans.

Democratic Congressman John Connally, according to the website, pointed to the danger of holding elections in Libya, while armed groups continue to control power across vast areas of land.

For her part, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for North African Affairs, Karen Sasahara, explained that the Russians are looking to gain a foothold in Africa, and that Libya is a very attractive starting point for them, according to the site.

Russia is considering resuming its diplomatic representation in Tripoli and Benghazi.
