Al-Koni rejects Al-Lafi’s initiative on the elections… The mission calls on MPs to adopt the commission’s amendments.

The course of the elections in Libya is still witnessing a lot of sharp disputes, the latest of which is the clear dispute between two presidential members, Al-Lafi and Al-Koni over Al-Lafi’s initiative to postpone the elections.

While the United Nations Support Mission in Libya called on the Parliament to adopt the commission’s amendments to the electoral law, the commission still confirms every time its readiness to hold the elections on time. It is possible to hold free, fair, inclusive and credible parliamentary and presidential elections simultaneously on December 24.

The mission also called for the removal of restrictions on participation in the elections; To allow Libyans who hold public positions the opportunity to freeze their duties from the time they submit their candidacy for presidential elections, as proposed by the High Electoral Commission, pointing out that any different opinions will not represent the Presidential Council without the agreement of the three members, and according to a signed record, otherwise it is a personal opinion.

In reference to the initiative of a member of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, who presented an initiative containing a road map that explains the mechanism for reaching legislative and presidential elections, no later than the end of March 2022, provided that the electoral process begins on December 24, 2021.

HNEC confirms its readiness

The head of the High National Electoral Commission, Imad al-Sayeh, confirmed in press statements that the commission is ready for the elections on December 24 to implement the wishes of the Libyans and what they have agreed upon, and to work hard on that, and that the door for candidacy will open in the first half of next month.

Al-Sayeh added that they had issued 2.8 million voter cards with security features, indicating that they had completed 80% of the procedures for holding the elections, and the remaining 20% had been decided upon and are only awaiting implementation.

No need for initiatives

Journalist Abdul Aziz Al-Ghanai believes in a statement to Arraed, that there is no need for Abdullah Al-Lafi’s initiative in the first place, because the commission acknowledges every time that it is ready to hold elections on time unless it is to create the environment for Dbaiba to run for office, and then it is assumed that Al-Lafi knows that Dbaiba is not entitled to run. According to the roadmap, in addition to the fact that the presidential election law was approved on the 8th of September, and it was circulated and published, which is enough time for those in positions to resign, as some did.

Al-Ghanai added that the commission seeks to involve everyone, but those in power now know that they do not have the right to run for office in the first place. This was not a surprise and could not be an exclusion.

clear disagreement

As for the journalist writer Mussa Tehosai, he said in a statement to Arraed, that the dispute over the Al-Lafi initiative has begun to surface, which Al-Koni expressed in his latest statement, adding that it is unfortunate that the contagion of differences over the election will be transmitted to the Presidential Council, as this means that the fate of the elections will be Unknown, but the presidential council can still remedy the matter and as a whole push towards the aspirations of Libyans for change

Tehosai added that the amendment requested by the commission regarding the candidate not stopping his work until the day of applying for candidacy is logical. As for what was stated in the election law issued by the House of Representatives, it is only a kind of political plot.

Member of Parliament Bashir al-Ahmer said in a statement to Arraed that most members of Parliament are now preparing a memorandum and statement directed to the United Nations and the UN mission; To urge them not to go too far and interfere in the internal Libyan affairs

Al-Ahmer added that preparing the election law is an original work for the House of Representatives, and the UN mission has no right to interfere or recommend some articles or laws, noting that the mission’s statement aims to “pass some personalities who do not meet the conditions,” in particular its demand to remove the condition of the candidate giving up his position before Three months into the electoral process, noting that most of the amendments submitted by the commission were approved, with the exception of one article that was rejected, which is the “electronic voting” process, to reduce fraud, and we will not allow this.

President of the Tunisian-African Business Council: The Libyan assets frozen in Tunisia amount to 250 million dollars.

Al-Jehani: The mission statement is a blatant interference, and the election laws will not be according to its mood.
