Bashagha discusses with the American government delegation the dismantling of armed militias all over the country.

Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha discussed with the US government the plan to disband and merge militias in western and eastern Libya after the end of the aggression on Tripoli.

The two parties, through a closed-circuit meeting, stressed the need for Libyans to enjoy protection of security forces capable and accountable, away from the dangers posed by militias, armed groups and foreign fighters, according to the official website of the American embassy.

Bashagha and his accompanying delegation briefed the American side on its efforts to enhance security, the militia disarmament, demobilization and reintegration program, in addition to the ongoing work to neutralize unexploded ordnance in the area south of Tripoli.

The American delegation stressed its opposition to all foreign interference in Libya, and the need for an immediate ceasefire and a return to the security and political negotiations supervised by the United Nations.

The two parties have made it clear that armed groups trying to spoil the political process or engage in criminal acts will be subject to international sanctions.

The United States was represented at this meeting by the First Director of the National Security Council, Major General Miguel Correa, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Henry Woster, and Deputy Director of the African-American Command, Dean Stephen Demiliano, in addition to the American Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland.

The Ministry of Interior was also represented by the Deputy Undersecretary for Security Affairs, Brigadier General Mohamed Al-Madaghi, Director of the International Police Office, Brigadier Abdul Hamid Al-Ghazali, Director of Security Cooperation, Brigadier Ali Al-Nawasiri, Director of Central Administration, Brigadier General Mahmoud Fathallah, and Director of Training, Brigadier General Fathi Aoun, “and the head of the Criminal Investigation Board, Brigadier General” Mahmoud Ashour “.

It is worth noting that the US ambassador to Libya, “Richard Norland” confirmed, last February, his country’s support for the efforts of the National Accord government in working to dismantle armed groups throughout Libya.
