Italian Interior: Libya is the second after Tunisia in the number of immigrants

The Italian Interior Ministry said on Monday that Libya is the second largest source of illegal immigrants to Italy, after Tunisia who is ranked first in the number of migrants.

The ministry added in a report that Tunisia is the first source of immigrants to Italy by 36.8%, followed by Libya with 22.3%, and Turkey with 21%, according to the Tunisian newspaper Al-Sabah.

The report pointed out that the number of immigrants who arrived at the Italian border between August 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019 amounted to 8,691 immigrants, including 1,119 unaccompanied minors, according to the newspaper.

According to the report, figures for illegal arrivals in Italy fell from 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2018.

It is noteworthy that the European Agency for the control and protection of external borders of the European Union “Frontex”, announced in February, the number of migrants coming from the shores of Libya last year droped by 87% compared to 2017.
