Italian Interior Minister Marco Minetti said that control of Libya’s southern border is “crucial” in order to counter illegal immigration and terrorism.
In a speech on migration at the European Parliament in Brussels, Minetti said that he ‘does not rule out’ the exploitation of foreign fighters, who join ISIS in Syria and Iraq, to reach Europe through migration flows, according to the Italian agency Aki.
In addition, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has expressed fears on more than one occasion of over ISIS fighters exploiting the boats of immigration to reach the shores of Europe.
The President of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj called on the international community to help Libya in securing its southern border to reduce the phenomenon of migration.
