Martin Kobler, the UN’s special envoy to Libya, held a meeting on Thursday with Libyan officials to discuss the Libyan Political Agreement in relation to recent events in Libya.
The meeting “discussed the way forward in the Libyan Political Agreement implementation,” said the UN’s special envoy to Libya. Kobler’s meeting was “with the Libyan Political Dialogue members, Fathi Bashagha, the head of the Justice and Construction Party, Mohamed Sowane, Suliman Faqeeh.”
Moreover, in a post on Twitter, Kobler stated that he had met with Abdul-Rahman Al-Swehli, the State Council’s chairman and “discussed how the UN and the International Community could support the Libyans.”
Libya is currently suffering from widespread lawlessness, a failing economy, and political chaos and instability. The North African country fell into this tragic state following the Libyan uprising that deposed former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
Currently there are two main political powers in Libya, the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli and the Tobruk-based House of Representatives. The HoR has previously refused to give the GNA its support and without it the fledgling government will continue to face challenges in governing Libya.
The HoR will soon be voting on whether or not they support the new cabinet assembled by the GNA.
Earlier this month, a UN mediation team called on Libya’s eastern parliament to formally recognize the Libyan political agreement which was signed nearly a year ago. The meditation team also called on the Presidential Council “to improve its performance to address the stifling security, social and economic problems that face Libyan citizens across the country”.
