The United States is extending its airstrikes campaign against ISIS targets in Sirte for a third month.

AFRICOM, the US Africa command, launched the airstrike campaign on August 1st, and was only expected to go on for a number of weeks.

A total of 175 airstrikes were carried out against ISIS since last week and will continue into October.

The airstrike campaign began after a request for military support from UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in its fight against ISIS.

However, the Libyan government made it clear that it will not allow for any foreign troops to fight on Libyan soil, and that the only military personnel on the ground in Libya are military strategists advising Libyan forces on how to advance on ISIS militants.
