On Wednesday, the US State Department published its annual human rights report for the year 2020, saying that Haftar’s forces in the Eastern Province carried out enforced disappearances, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention.
The Foreign Ministry added – according to its official website – that in September 2020, these forces killed a civilian and injured three others, following peaceful demonstrations in the city of Al-Marj.
The annual report included its assertion that foreign mercenaries carried out unlawful killings, and Russia provided support to Haftar through the Wagner mercenaries. As a result, hundreds of civilians were killed, and the “Wagner” randomly planted landmines and improvised explosive devices in the suburbs of Tripoli.
The US State Department stated that unidentified gunmen killed anti-corruption activist Hanan Al-Barasi in Benghazi. For criticizing Haftar’s violations, and that the Al-Kani militia carried out unlawful detentions and torture in the city of Tarhuna, and kidnapped a number of civilians, including women.
The city of Benghazi is witnessing a wave of chaos and lack of security, including assassinations and enforced disappearances, the most recent of which was the killing of the leader of Haftar’s militia, Mahmoud al-Werfalli, and the kidnapping of the daughter of the slain lawyer Hanin al-Abdali and her brother Ayman.
