British lawyer “Karim Khan” elected a new Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to succeed “Fatou Bensouda”
The 50-year-old Khan won the second round of voting at the United Nations headquarters in New York with the support of 72 countries, that is, ten countries more than the 62 required, to secure his victory in the high position.
Khan competed with three candidates from Ireland, Italy and Spain to succeed Bensouda, who has led investigations that have met with objection, including on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Afghanistan.
Khan, who is the court’s third Chief Prosecutor since its inception in 2002, will be responsible for large files and complex cases.
Khan, a British human rights lawyer, recently headed a special UN investigation into the crimes of the “Islamic State” and called for trials similar to those of Nazi leaders in Nuremberg.
Despite several attempts in recent weeks, the member states of the International Criminal Court failed to reach consensus on appointing a new attorney general, and they had to settle their decision during a vote at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
It is worth noting that “Khan” is the head of the defense team for Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi before the International Criminal Court, and that he is assigned to follow up the file of accusations of owning a house worth millions of pounds in London, and forging a doctorate granted to him by the London School of Economics.
