After the signing of the ceasefire agreement, the culmination of the talks of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee in Geneva between the two delegations of the GNA and Haftar’s militias, was met with widespread local and international acceptance, praising this agreement and calling for its inclusion in the Security Council and its full implementation.
Calls for implementation
The UN Security Council called on the Libyan parties to implement the Geneva Agreement signed by the Joint Military Committee “5 + 5” in Geneva regarding a permanent ceasefire and the exit of foreign mercenaries within a maximum period of three months.
Council member states called on the Libyan parties to abide by their pledges and fully implement the agreement, and called for building on the ceasefire. In order to reach a solution through political dialogue, the Security Council statement also called on all countries to comply with the arms embargo and not to interfere in the internal affairs of Libya.
The GNA delegation and Williams
The head of the GNA’s delegation to the 5 + 5 Military Committee, Major General Ahmed Abo Shahma, had asked the UN Security Council to endorse its implementation by all countries, and the UN Acting envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, said that the agreement will be submitted to the Security Council, calling for the International community to support the findings of the Libyans.
International welcome
In the same context, this agreement has received international welcome and praise, the European Union, the Italian government and the Chargé d’Affairs of the Russian ambassador to Libya, as well as the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in addition to the United States Embassy in Libya, the Secretary-General of the United Nations “Antonio Guterres” and the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Signing the agreement
The last round of talks between the delegations of the “5 + 5” military committee, which was held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, which was held between 19 and 23 October culminated in the signing of a comprehensive agreement for a permanent ceasefire, stipulating the return of all military units to their camps, in addition to Opening land roads, ensuring the safety of those passing through them, and the departure of all mercenaries from the Libyan territories within a maximum period of 3 months.
