The UN mission in Libya said on Friday that recent rulings by the Benghazi and Al-Bayda courts represent a potential violation of Libya’s obligations under international humanitarian law.
In a statement issued by the mission on its official page, the mission expressed concern about the recent death sentences issued by military courts in eastern Libya, as well as reports that the accused were not allowed to present their cases in the courts or examine the evidence of accusations against them.
The mission confirmed that these rulings were passed in secret after the trials without providing written rulings that explain the reasons to the accused or the lawyers, noting that this represents a potential violation of Libya’s obligations under international humanitarian law, according to the text of the statement.
It is worth noting that death sentences were passed against at least 13 citizens from the Benghazi High Court and four others from the Al Bayda Court.
