The head of the Electoral Commission, Imad al-Sayeh, confirmed during the accountability session in the House of Representatives, on Monday, that there are no foreign interference or pressure on the Electoral Commission or its work, and that he cannot determine the source of force majeure that prevented the elections; due to the overlap of its components.
Al-Sayeh said that the commission is keen not to be an opponent of the judicial bodies, and that what happened in the places of voter registration is nothing but a human error, which they seek to remedy by developing the registration system.
Al-Sayeh denied that they dealt with any forged number within the national number system, pointing out that the head of the Civil Status Authority denied existence of any fraud in their system.
Al-Sayeh added that they are not sure of the Ministry of Interior’s ability to secure the elections under the current circumstances, and that the commission has been charged with several accusations, and it was described as a failed institution; Although the appeals to the commission were not fair, but they referred the lists and data to the Public Prosecutor to open an investigation again.
Al-Sayeh added that many political parties refused to complete the electoral process by making threats to the commission to storm it if it published the final lists.
Al-Sayeh explained that they had detected scandalous fraud in the recommendations and signatures, and had excluded about 12 files. He also added that the Commission was unable to defend itself before the judiciary; Because the candidates have one location for appeals, the Commission has defended itself in 25 judicial locations.
It is worth noting that the House of Representatives has invited the Council of the Commission and its Chairman to attend its session in order to listen to them regarding the circumstances in which the elections could not be held on December 24.
