The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Libya, Stephanie Williams, said that candidates for the executive authority at the Political Dialogue Forum made written pledges not to run for elections, and they must respect the judiciary.
In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Sunday, Williams added that the elections must be held in the appropriate conditions, with the need to respect and ensure equal opportunities for all candidates to end the political transition peacefully and transfer power to elected institutions.
Williams confirmed that she will continue consultations with the various components and political actors, and the dialogue forum is one of them. To exchange ideas on the best ways to push the electoral process forward, pointing out that setting a date for elections is a matter for the authorities in Libya, and the United Nations is fully prepared to help overcome difficulties, she said.
In a related context, the Special Adviser explained that the process of removing mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya is a delicate and complex process, and it must be carried out carefully and slowly in order to ensure that the neighboring countries are not destabilized, and this requires time and careful coordination.
And “Williams” indicated that members of Parliament now bear the historical and national responsibility to respond quickly and efficiently to the recommendations of the Electoral Commission.
