The head of the Libyan-American Alliance, Issam Omeish, said that the judge of the East Virginia Court rejected Haftar’s defense lawyer’s request to grant him immunity from the cases brought against him in court.
Omeish explained, on his personal page, that Haftar’s lawyers’ team relied on fraud by presenting a text from the Libyan Military and Penal Code that requires not to “disclose secrets and provide information to the enemy” as a way to convince the judge that it is a government memorandum.
The head of the coalition confirmed that the National Unity Government and the Ministry of Defense did not submit any legal memorandum in favor of the “war criminal” lawyer team, noting that Haftar’s lawyer submitted it late, which angered the judge and rejected it completely, and ruled that he must appear before the court and oblige him to testify and answer the lawyers’ questions In both cases.
Omeish indicated that if Haftar refuses or violates the court order to appear or answer the questions submitted to him on the basis of any flimsy arguments, he will be subjected to a judgment in absentia with civil conviction and responsibility for the crimes committed.
