“FAO” Global food prices jump to their highest level in 10 years.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said Thursday that global food prices reached their highest level in 10 years during 2021, registering an increase of 28% compared to the previous year 2020.

According to a report by the organization, reported by the Russian “Sputnik” agency, its index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of common traded food commodities, recorded a slight decrease in food prices during last December.

The organization added, however, that the index was at the level of 133.7 points last month, which is still close to the record level recorded in February 2011 at 137.6 points.

For the whole of last year, the index stood at 125.7 points, which is also the highest level in a decade, the organization said.

It is worth noting that the “FAO” revealed in a report issued earlier, that the Corona pandemic revealed the vulnerability of agricultural and food systems to shocks, and led to an increase in food insecurity and malnutrition in the world.
