The French website, Africa Intelligence, revealed that the UAE failed to convince its ally Haftar to secure an agreement with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, after weeks of intense diplomatic contacts.
The website added, on Tuesday, that negotiations began since mid-October in Abu Dhabi between Haftar’s and Dbaiba envoys ended in failure, and that Haftar is resisting UAE pressure to reach any deal with Dbaiba, including the possibility of postponing or canceling the elections on December 24.
Africa Intelligence website explained that Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed is one of the main sponsors of Haftar, who gave him great diplomatic and financial support, and prepared his militias greatly despite the arms embargo on Libya, pointing out that bin Zayed and his advisors fear losing their “hard” earned positions in Libya.
The website confirmed the failure of Khalifa Haftar to fully establish his presence in the Fezzan region, which he only controls parts of, and that he categorically rejected the UAE’s attempts to play the role of mediator, and announced his official candidacy for the presidential elections, and did not participate directly in the talks with the Dbaiba camp, as he left that to his son Belgacem, who plays the role of political advisor.
