Fact-Finding Committee: We have prepared a list of countries and mercenaries involved in war crimes in Libya, and we will announce it as soon as investigations are completed.

The head of the Independent International fact finding mission Commission in Libya, Mohammed Aujjar on Thursday, confirmed that the committee has prepared a list of countries, militias and foreign mercenaries who committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Libya, and that the list is available to the United Nations and all international criminal accountability mechanisms.

And “Aujjar ” indicated in a statement to Al-Jazeera that the committee will announce the list of names of those involved in these crimes when it completes its investigations, and all the responsible and involved parties will be announced, whether they are countries, militias, mercenaries or people, and that the goal is to end the state of impunity, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators of these crimes before national and international courts.

The head of the committee added that they would continue to investigate many cases, but the time was not enough to complete all the research and investigations, and despite the short period of time, they found evidence that violations in Libya exceeded normal levels in all crises, and amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Aujjar explained that they had asked the Human Rights Council to extend the commission’s mission in order to complete their investigations, so that the results would be announced during the next session of the Council.

Aujjar revealed that the committee was unable to reach southern and eastern Libya, stressing the urgent need for judicial accountability for those involved in crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Libya, in order to deter their perpetrators and promote peace and reconciliation.

In his report, the head of the committee confirmed that “Wagner” mercenaries shot detainees and planted mines in residential areas during Haftar’s attack on Tripoli between April 2019 and June 2020, and the killings carried out by his “Al-Kaniyat” militia in Tarhuna, where dozens of graves were found since June 2020.

The report included the arrest of more than 5,000 migrants and asylum seekers in less than a week in Tripoli, “and the use of excessive force in raids and arbitrary arrests, which led to the death of at least one detainee and the injury of others, including women and children, who were sent to overcrowded detention centers despite the lack of food.” and basic services.
