The representative of the United States of America to the Security Council, Thomas Greenfield, called for the necessity of holding free and fair elections in Libya on December 24th, threatening to impose international sanctions on those who obstruct them.
“Greenfield” – during her speech before the Security Council – Friday, said that the Libyan people have made tremendous progress towards national reconciliation and that it is time for the Libyan leadership to clarify the constitutional basis for the elections, approve the required legislation and ensure that it is not postponed.
The delegate called for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and that the United States fully supports the terms of the ceasefire, stressing the need for all external parties participating in the conflict to stop their military intervention and start an immediate withdrawal.
The American delegate concluded her speech that Washington supports the investigation being conducted by the International Criminal Court into the situation in Libya.
It is worth noting that the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joy Hood, confirmed last Tuesday, during his visit to Tripoli, that his country’s goal is to hold free and fair elections in Libya, without foreign interference, according to the roadmap of the political agreement.
