Norland: “Libya needs an elected government with full powers to rule the country, not an interim government.

The US ambassador to Libya, “Richard Norland,” said that the situation in Libya needs a government with full powers, not just an interim government that can restore the country’s sovereignty and unity and get rid of foreign forces, and the way to achieve this is through elections.

Norland expressed, in statements to the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, his optimism that the elections will be held on the scheduled date next December, indicating that there are those who will try to obstruct them, stressing that the most important factor is that Libyans want elections.

The ambassador explained that the next basic step is to lay down the constitutional and legal basis on which these elections will be held, by no later than July 1, indicating that the House of Representatives must approve these constitutional basis.

Norland stated that the House of Representatives is advancing slowly. And if it does not approve the constitutional base, then it is possible to resort to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum mechanism, which remains alive and can be resorted to if the parliament does not do what it ought to
