The co-presidency of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya confirmed on Wednesday that the primary task of the Interim Executive Authority is to ensure that the national parliamentary and presidential elections are held next December, according to the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.
The committee urged – according to a statement – on the website of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya – the House of Representatives to expedite the adoption of the unified budget of the government. To provide basic services to the population throughout Libya, including electricity, the continued operation of the oil sector and a transparent and equitable distribution of resources.
The committee called on the House of Representatives to clarify and enact the constitutional base and the necessary framework for the elections, no later than July 1.
The Follow-up Committee stressed the need to take serious steps towards disarming, demobilizing and reintegrating armed groups, including all relevant non-state armed parties, addressing the humanitarian situation and further intensifying their response to the Coronavirus pandemic, protecting human rights, refugees and migrants, and promoting national reconciliation.
The co-presidency expressed its concern about the impact of the conflict on neighboring countries, and the threats arising from the illegal transfer of weapons, their destabilizing accumulation, misuse, and the influx of armed and mercenary groups, stressing that the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement is still a matter of great importance and all actors must accelerate the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya without delay, and to comply with the arms embargo imposed on the country.
