The Legal Committee has agreed on a constitutional base that will be presented to the Political Dialogue Forum.

The Legal Committee emanating from the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum concluded its direct meeting, which lasted three days, in Tunis, to complete the discussions on the constitutional basis needed for national elections.

On its official page, the UN mission said that the members of the Legal Committee overcame the divisions and reached a consensus on the constitutional base for the elections, explaining that it had been informed of the contentious issues that would be referred to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum for a decision.

The mission commended the efforts made by members of the Legal Committee to address this important issue.

In a related context, the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubiš, urged the members of the legal committee to identify the most harmonious and compatible way, to consolidate their discussions and submit their report to the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, affirming the mission’s full commitment to holding national elections on December 24th.

The members of the committee pledged to submit their final report on the discussions and results reached to the general session of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum for decision.

The UN mission confirmed that it would soon hold a meeting of the Political Dialogue Forum, to discuss this report and consider the recommendation of the Legal Committee regarding the constitutional rule necessary for holding elections.

It is reported that the UN envoy to Libya “Jan Kubiš” called on March 26, the international community to provide support for the Libyan people and the new leadership, to hold the elections on the scheduled date of December 24th.
