The Secretary-General of the United Nations, “Antonio Guterres,” officially appointed the Slovak “Jan Kubis” as his special envoy and the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, succeeding the former envoy Ghassan Salama and the Acting Head of Mission, “Stephanie Williams”.

“Guterres” , according to a statement on the mission’s official website, said that “Kubis” will assume his duties as head of the mission starting from the beginning of next February, expressing his gratitude for what “Williams” provided to push the political process in Libya forward.

It is worth noting that “Kubis” worked as a special representative of the head of the United Nations mission in Iraq between 2011 and 2018 and in Afghanistan between 2011 and 2015, and held the position of executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Europe from 2009 to 2011 and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia from 2006 to 2009.
