The Acting Head of the United Nations Mission in Libya, Stephanie Williams, said Saturday that the aim of the talks is “to restore legitimacy to its owners through elections that enable Libyans to choose their representatives through democratic methods, and to renew the legitimacy of Libyan institutions.”
In a press release, Williams welcomed the start of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and the arrival of the Libyan parties to participate in the Forum for Political Dialogue, to be held in Tunisia, on Monday.
Williams stressed the necessity of agreeing on the necessary arrangements that allow these elections to take place in the shortest possible time, including finding a unified executive authority and agreeing on a constitutional and legal basis for holding the elections in a manner appropriate to the stage and its challenges.
Williams stressed her endeavor to secure the commitment to unify the Libyan institutions, which will be binding and responsible for preparing for the elections and ensuring that they are held as soon as possible.
Williams added that the unified executive authority must work to ensure the provision of vital public services during this difficult time facing Libyans and to create a climate of national reconciliation through confidence-building measures.
Williams called for taking advantage of this opportunity to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people to live in peace, security, prosperity and stability, and to enjoy a country that guarantees transparency and accountability and protects human rights.
