The Ambassador of the European Union and ambassadors of accredited members to Libya called on Libyan leaders to protect freedom of the media, independent media and to establish a safe working environment for journalists in Libya.
On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists Monday, the ambassadors demanded that perpetrators of crimes against journalists be brought to justice, calling on the Libyan authorities to lift the obstacles that foreign journalists face when carrying out their work in Libya.
The ambassadors said that Libyan journalists, media professionals and activists are still subjected to campaigns of intimidation, defamation and attacks on their homes and families, and they are being prosecuted arbitrarily because of the work they do, which has exacerbated the threats to media freedom in Libya.
The ambassadors added that journalists work in a precarious environment, and in May 2020 a military court in Benghazi sentenced photojournalist Ismaili Bo zeriba Zoui to 15 years in prison, noting that Libya stands at a critical juncture in the process of establishing sustainable peace.
It is worth noting that the 2nd of November of each year marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
