The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed Tuesday the appointment of five women judges to work in two newly built specialized courts in Benghazi and Tripoli, to consider cases of violence against women and children.
The mission said in a statement on its official website that the establishment of these two specialized courts and the appointment of judges is an important step towards promoting the rights of women and children in Libya, adding that the establishment of such specialized courts will greatly expand the criminal justice response to cases of violence against women and children.
The mission confirmed that it is committed to a partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN Women to provide a specialized training program for all judges appointed to the newly established courts, and looks forward to working closely with the Libyan Supreme Judicial Council to implement this program.
