President of the Presidential Council Faiz Al-Sarraj said that Libyan parties have renounced a previous agreement to end the struggle for power and the problematic divisions in the country.
During his meeting with the UN delegation currently visiting Libya, Al-Sarraj stressed that the option of the presidential and parliamentary elections which he announced more than a year ago is one of the initiatives taken by UN envoy Ghassan Salama which was agreed upon at several international meetings.
Al-Sarraj expressed his support for Salama’s steps, which include holding a national assembly, followed by simultaneous elections to choose a new president and legislative body after completing the required constitutional entitlements.
Al-Sarraj called on the international community to provide technical and logistical support to the Electoral Commission and to send international supervisors and observers to ensure that elections are held in an atmosphere of integrity and transparency in accordance with international standards.
On the other hand, Al-Serraj added that Libya needs the expertise of United Nations organizations and the experiences of other countries in the integration of armed formations, rehabilitation of military elements and contributing to the establishment of youth development programs.
Last May, France gathered the Libyan parties in Paris to resolve the Libyan crisis. The meeting came out with an initiative to hold parliamentary and presidential elections before the end of this year.
