HCS condemns attack on Derna; calls PC to protect civilians

The High Council of the State (HCS) condemned the “unjustified” military assault on the people of Derna, saying it was “one of the most egregious violations of international law and a violation of all human, moral and legal values.”

In a statement, the Council expressed its concern and fear over the continuation of the attack, which will cause what it described as a “catastrophe and a grave and inhuman situation”.

According to the statement, the HCS called on the Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA) to take all active and urgent measures to achieve a ceasefire in the city, and called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to take responsibility of the situation in Derna.

Hafter Forces launched an armed offensive on the city of Derna for days, after being under siege for more than two years.
