The European Union council extended the sanctions imposed on the former National Congress President Nuri Abu Sahmien, the head of the National Salvation Government Khalifa Al-Ghwail and Speaker of the House of Representatives Aqila Saleh for another six months.
In a statement on the official website, the EU attributed the extension of the sanctions period to the continuing instability and the gravity of the situation in Libya, stressing that the situation in Libya requires restrictive measures for the said persons.
In March 2016, the European Union imposed the sanctions, which include a travel ban and freezing the assets of those mentioned, on the grounds that the three were obstructing the political agreement.
