UNHCR repatriates 1334 of the 48,000 refugees in Libya

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has deported 1334 of the 48,000 refugees registered in Libya to other countries.

According to the AFP, UNHCR representative in Libya, Roberto Mignone announced on Wednesday, the evacuation of 1334 refugees among the “most vulnerable in Libya,” including 1020 to Niger and 312 to Italy, and expressed the hope to evacuate between 5 thousand and 10 thousand refugees this year.

Mignone added that the Commission will rely on the transit center to be established in Tripoli with the capacity to accommodate 1000 people as an alternative to the shelters to accelerate the operations of asylum seekers.

Since last November, the UNHCR has repatriated more than 1,000 refugees whom it described as “the most vulnerable” from Libya.
