Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano calls for international cooperation for the monitoring of the Libyan border

On Thursday, while presiding over the UN Security Council Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano stressed the need for increased security measures on the Libyan border.

Alfano stated that “the fight against terrorism remains a strategic priority” and that  “enforcing control” of the border is “crucial”. He added that ISIS fighters defeated in Iraq and Syria were able to pass over to Libya and onto Europe.

Alfano noted that Italy has saved and received thousands of refugees and migrants. He then stressed that the task of monitoring the Libyan border must be shared by the main actors in the international community- according to the Italian News agency “Aki”.
