Two Italians and a Canadian have reportedly been kidnapped in Southern Libya, said the Italian foreign ministry on Monday.

Italian media outlets first reported that the two Italians were abducted in the desert but no further information has yet been given.

A spokeswoman for the Italian ministry said that they, along with its crisis unit, have been following the situation closely.

The Canadian was also kidnapped along with the Italians, reports Sky Italia television.

The two Italians and the Canadian were reported to have been in the southern city of Ghat, which is under the control of the UN-backed Government of National Accord, where they were employed as maintenance workers at a local airport.
