Twenty-nine Indians, including six families from Kerala and three from Tamil Nadu, returned to India on Thursday after being stranded in Libya since March.
The Indian families attempted to flee Libya after a nurse from Kerala and her one year old son had been killed in a shelling at their home in Sabratha on March 25.
The group, including nurses who worked at Zawiya hospital, were stranded amid escalating violence in the country and did not receive proper food or water after attempting to escape.
“I was in the same hospital. After the incident we moved to a shelter owned by a Libyan,” said a member of the group to 2News.
The group received some aid from the Non Resident Keralites Affairs Department (NORKA) including financial assistance and transportation while in Libya.
On Wednesday a political fight erupted after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government has evacuated the families from Libya between Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy over who paid for families travel back to India.
