On Sunday Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj called on the international community to assist Libya in its fight against extremist forces by lifting the UN sanctioned arms embargo and unfreezing its assets.

Speaking at the Arab league in Cairo, Sarraj stated that, “it doesn’t make sense that the international community supports our war against terrorism, and forbids us from arming ourselves.”

Western nations have expressed their faith in the UN-backed Government of National Accord’s (GNA) ability to unite the country and eradicate the Islamic State threat.

Sarraj met with Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi on Saturday who stated that he supported Sarraj’s unity government and also called for the UN arms embargo on Libya to lifted so that the official Libyan army is properly equipped to win the fight against Islamic State forces in Sirte.
