The House of Representatives (HoR), which is backed by General Khalifa Haftar and his rival to the UN-backed Libyan government, has voted “no confidence” in recognizing the Government of National Accord (GNA), said Abdullah Ablahig, spokesperson for the HoR.
The result of the vote was a major setback to the efforts by the UN and the international community to unify Libya.
During Monday’s vote, there were 101 lawmakers present that meant a quorum was reached which validated the vote, said Ablahig. 61 members voted against supporting the UN backed government, while 29 abstained, and there was one member who voted for the support of the GNA.
Now that the voting is over, many are unsure of what will happen next. There are claims from some legislators that the results of the vote can effectively dissolve the UN-backed Libyan government, however, those who support the government refute that claim.
The HoR is based in Tobruk, a city in eastern Libya, and the UN backed government is based in Tripoli, Libya’s capital.
