GNA Forces Begin Post-Liberation Clean Up

(Author: Libyan Gazette Editorial Staff)

After making major gains in Sirte this week, forces loyal to the UN-backed government (GNA) began the process of clearing the areas they liberated of any landmines and other explosives left by ISIS.

Though the GNA backed forces were able to make major gains, there are still some areas in Sirte where ISIS fighters are hiding. It is not clear how many ISIS fighters are hiding in the unliberated areas in Sirte’s centre.

GNA forces discovered a house that ISIS used to make explosive belts and also found military vehicles that were left behind, said Rida Issa, a spokesperson for the GNA forces.

“Military engineering units are now working to clear the captured areas of mines,” Issa said.

Mokhtar Fakron, a spokesperson for the air force, was killed on Wednesday along with another pilot after their jet crashed somewhere over Sirte.
