41 Bodies Found on Libyan Shore

(Author: Libyan Gazette Editorial Staff)

On Saturday 41 bodies, thought to be refugees, were found by volunteers on shores of Sabratha, a coastal city in Libya. The volunteers received training provided by the city council to spot human trafficking victims in mid-July.

“We think that these are people who drowned five or six days ago,” said an official from Sabratha. DNA tests were performed on each body to try to identify who they are.

The Libyan official said they are used to having one or two bodies wash up on its shores every day and that 41 was “an exceptionally high number.”

The increase in migration during the summer is because the sea is usually calmer during the season.

Since 2014 over 10,000 refugees fleeing unstable war-torn African nations for a dignified life in Europe have died on route or have disappeared said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
