Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Moussa al-Kawni the Deputy Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) in Cairo on Thursday.

Shoukry and al-Kawni discussed the latest developments in Libya and the importance of obtaining national reconciliation.

The two sides discussed efforts on how to reach unity in Libya in a way that represents the needs of all parties and to ensure the success of the GNA.

Before the meeting between the two sides, a telephone call between Shoukry and Libya’s Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj took place on Sunday where they discussed recent events in Libya and the importance of intensifying the offensive against Islamic State forces.

A spokesperson for Shoukry said that Sarraj expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continued support for Libya and that he looked forward to visiting Egypt.

While Egypt has declared its support of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR) and its armed wing led by General Khalifa Haftar, it has also put pressure on the HoR to accept the UN-backed unity government.
