Adviser to the Secretary-General of the UN to Libya, Stephanie Williams, stressed on Wednesday the importance of holding the Libyan elections by June 2022, adding that the UN is not eligible to determine who can run for the Libyan elections, and that this decision is Libyan.
In an interview with CNN, Williams said that the United Nations is working with Libyan institutions; To put the electoral process back on track as soon as possible, pointing out that these institutions are facing a crisis in their legitimacy that can only be resolved through elections that lead to the democratic election of a president and government.
Williams expressed her confidence in the possibility of continuing to respond to the voices of Libyans who want to go to the polls, and to end this long transitional period, indicating that “the elections will take Libya to a more permanent future, especially as it is currently living in a state of chaos.”
