The former Chief of Staff of the Turkish Naval Forces: Libya’s oil wealth and geopolitical location made it a theater for global power struggle.

Former Chief of Staff of the Turkish Navy, Admiral Cihat Yaci, said that Libya’s large oil reserves and other underground resources, as well as its geopolitical location, have made it a theater for global powers and struggles for hegemony.

Yaci, who is considered the architect of the maritime agreement between Libya and Turkey, added in an article published by Al Jazeera Mubasher that world powers that are trying to prioritize their economic, political and oil interests do not want to build an integrative democracy in Libya.

Yaci explained that the Libyan people’s biggest fear from the elections is the possibility of electing a new dictator, and that actors such as the United States and France are imposing policies aimed at maximizing their own interests in the region.

Yaci added that Turkey is the only country that supports democratic development and dialogue in the region, both institutionally and politically.

Yaci pointed out that there are sensitive issues in Libya that have not yet been resolved, and on the other hand, the United Nations has not played its role as it should.

Yaci concluded his article by saying that the strength and authority of the tribes in Libya is an undeniable reality. It is therefore essential that the parliamentary elections ensure the harmony of the tribes and the correct balance of power.

It is worth noting that Admiral Cihat Yaci was the commander of the Turkish naval forces and is described as the architect of the maritime border demarcation agreement between Libya and Turkey signed in November 2019.
