The UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, said that holding comprehensive, free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections on time is critical to breaking out of the cycle of political transition.
Kubis stressed – in an official farewell statement, that it is necessary to start building a state of unity, prosperity and true sovereignty with the end of foreign interference, pointing out that the majority of the Libyan people want elections.
The UN envoy added that elections may not be the solution to all the problems that Libya suffers from, but it is a very important step, and opens the way for a way out of the state of division, discord, paralysis and dysfunction that plagued institutions that lack real authority, which makes them a fertile ground for foreign interference.
Kubis clarified that refraining from the elections and mobilizing against them will only lead to placing the fate and future of the country at the mercy of those inside Libya and their supporters abroad who benefit from the debilitating current situation.
It is worth noting that media sources announced on November 23 the news of the sudden resignation of the United Nations envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, which was confirmed later by Kubis.
