The High Elections Commission announced that the final number of candidates for the presidential elections reached 98, 73 of whom submitted their files to the Electoral Administration Office in Tripoli, 12 to the Benghazi office, and 13 to the Sabha office.
Imad al-Sayeh, head of the commission, said in a press conference that the commission will begin publishing the initial list of candidates to allow rivals to challenge the names it contained, adding that the number of candidates for the House of Representatives reached 1,766, and it is expected to reach 4,000 candidates for the parliamentary elections.
And al-Sayeh, that the large number of candidates, prompted them to postpone the publication of the initial lists in order to make appeals available, explaining that the Commission will announce the preliminary lists tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, Thursday.
Al-Sayeh explained that the total number of voters who received their electoral cards amounted to more than 1.7 million, or 60% of the total number of cards, expecting that the total number will exceed 2 million cards.
In a related context, al-Sayeh confirmed the commission’s receipt of the letter of the Military Prosecutor General, about stopping the candidacy of Haftar and Saif Gaddafi, indicating that they will look into the data contained in it, indicating that the text of the law is clear that the candidate must not be sentenced to a final court ruling, as he put it.
Regarding the controversy over Article 12 of the Presidential Elections Law, Al-Sayeh stressed that only the judiciary will decide in this controversy, pointing out that securing the electoral process is going well and that the Ministry of Interior will open tomorrow, Wednesday, the security operations room for securing the electoral process.
The head of the commission stated that they signed a contract with the “DHL” company to be able to send the voter’s vote from 42 countries around the world, while the elections will be held directly in 3 countries: Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia.
