MEM: American insistence on holding elections on time, and Congressional law will target obstructionists, most notably Haftar.

The British “Middle East Monitor” website said that there is American insistence on holding the Libyan elections on time, and that the United States and Western countries are working to activate their diplomatic arsenal, threatening to impose sanctions “in view of this slowness in taking the necessary steps to conduct them.”

The website added that the purpose of the Congress’s issuance of the Libya Stability Law is to give American institutions the necessary space to move and confront Russian infiltration into Libya and the coast, and to avoid any Russian or supportive Chinese veto that might obstruct these elections if the file is discussed in the Security Council.

The website indicated that the US “Libya Stability Law” will be a sword targeting many prominent figures in the scene, led by Haftar and his sons; Because they are at the heart of his bloody project, and their fate will not differ from the fate of the sons of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, according to the site.

The website indicated that the horizon has become blocked for Khalifa Haftar, and that his political future depends on the developments of the American position on the Libyan crisis and the entire region based on previous experiences.

The website added that the lobbying companies with which Haftar signed contracts to promote him in American political circles had terminated their contracts with him a few weeks before the Congress voted on the law because they did not find an official who agreed to meet Haftar.

The website indicated that Haftar is being tried in absentia in Virginia, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the attack on Tripoli in April 2019, as these cases are considered a prelude to others that will be brought against him.

The website indicated that Haftar’s defense team did not reject the charges and was satisfied with trying to obtain immunity from trial, on the grounds that Libyan laws punish those who provide information containing secrets belonging to the Libyan state with the death penalty.

The website indicated that there are reports that some major powers offered Haftar the opportunity to safely exit and reside in the Emirates and put an end to obstructing the path of transformation in Libya.

It is worth noting that the US State Department stressed in a press release on October 8 that holding free and fair elections in Libya is very important for America and that it will continue to work on it and support it with its partners in the international community, according to a press conference of the ministry’s spokesman, Ned Price.
