The UN mission calls on the government to address what was stated in the statement of “Cyrenaica officials” without delay.

In a statement on Sunday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya called on the Government of National Unity to seek to address what was stated in the statement of “Cyrenaica officials” without delay, urging all parties to enter into a direct and constructive dialogue and to continue to adhere to the road map.

The mission urged all parties to avoid escalation and to refrain from any action that could threaten the unity of the country and its institutions and could obstruct, directly or indirectly, the holding of the elections on December 24.

The mission recalled the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which indicate the possibility of considering possible measures against individuals or entities that impede the completion of the political transition in Libya.

The mission called on the Libyan parties to work in a spirit of compromise and acceptance of the other in order to address grievances and concerns through negotiation

It reminded all parties of the importance of respecting December 24 as the date for the elections approved by the Dialogue Forum and endorsed by the Security Council to establish institutions that enjoy legitimacy from the people, because the current situation is not only unsustainable, but leads to instability and division.

It is worth noting that the Deputy Prime Minister issued, on Saturday, a statement denouncing some of the actions of the Prime Minister after a meeting he called at the Government Office in Benghazi that included Cyrenaica government officials, represented by First Deputy Prime Minister Hussein al-Qatrani, ministers, deputy ministers and mayors of municipalities.
